How do I keep myself always occupied/engaged in something?

Treat what you do as meditation.

Whenever you do whatever it is, practice only doing that.

Then when your mind starts to wander, don’t fight it; don’t get mad at yourself; just bring your attention back to your activity the same way you would return your focus to your breath or awareness in meditation.

Every day, after writing for about 20 minutes, I realize my mind has moved to something else—usually engaged in an imagined conversation with someone. So I close my eyes, take a slow breath or two, and just bring myself back to the words on screen.

You get better and better at treating what you do as meditation when you decide to make it a regular routine, like an art form you work at.
